The tour continues towards Dumitor National Park. Before we get all the way there, however, we come across the legendary Restaurant Paris. It became legendary, at least for us.
We drive into the car park in front of the restaurant, which at first glance has a bit of an alpine idyll about it. On the facade hangs a sign saying that this is Restaurant Paris.
You can't see into the restaurant from outside the car park, but from the sign, expectations are high. We are hungry.
There is a small path leading up to the main entrance. We open the door, walk in, and our lower jaws almost hit the floor with a bang.
It is old and worn, with shades of brown all over.
Christmas decorations from the last century still hang in one corner.
As in an American western film, there are 4 guys sitting around a table. They are busy drinking Slivovitz while playing cards and chain smoking cigarettes. There is complete silence and they look at us as if we come from an alien planet.
We don't quite know what to do with ourselves.
The toilet? Says one of the men, pointing towards a back room.
Sus dabbles out there, but quickly comes back. The condition of the facilities obviously leaves a lot to be desired and the urge to pee immediately evaporated like dew before the sun.
Via sign language and universal phrases we ask for food and one of the chain smokers who turns out to be the owner looks like a big question mark.
He was clearly not prepared for other merchandise than alcohol and cigarettes.
We could just as easily have asked for directions to the Great Wall of China or the Eiffel Tower, he was so surprised.
After a few seconds of deliberation, in which he had time to process this highly unusual request for food, he lights up and shows us to a table.
The table fits nicely in theme with the rest of the room – worn wax tablecloth and chairs that probably had their heyday 50-100 years ago. There is no menu card, but he says he will probably cook something for us.
We sit and chat and can hear some meat being pounded vigorously in the kitchen. It will now be very exciting to see what he comes up with. After a while he comes back with both freshly baked bread, delicious tomato salad and a dish of pounded meat and potatoes. We are very surprised, in a positive way.
How he could conjure up such a meal is a mystery to us. It tasted really good and showed us once again that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
We had a lovely meal for two, with a couple of soft drinks each. When the bill is calculated it will be 10 euros and we happily pay 15 for the whole thing.
The previously suspicious types all greet us smiling as we drive from the restaurant again.
With full bellies we continue towards the National Park.
The mountain range is one of the most beautiful in Europe, in many ways it resembles parts of Iceland. There are many visitors who take both bicycle and motorcycle trips here.
We stop in the same places as the others and enjoy the view. But when a heavy downpour and thunderstorm moves in, we can see all the bicycle mosquitoes whipping off at Tour de France pace to escape the rain, thunder & lightning. In the car, we can just roll up the windows 80% and put on some ambient music.
Nature then delivered a spectacular light show, in an impressive landscape where you could actually hear the sound of thunder rolling in the valleys.
