Balkans 2016 Episode 7

Montenegro + Bosnia-Herzegovina

We pull over to the side to take some photos near Pluzine. It doesn't take long before a small car comes milling at high speed and parks in the same place as us. A man jumps out and begins to talk very eagerly - possibly in Russian - about the naturally beneficial properties of the plants. There is almost nothing that plants cannot cure - even high spirits and a positive attitude towards life they seem to introduce.

He keeps saying "metabulismus, metabulismus" and then it's off to the almost vertical mountain wall, where he apparently has to collect herbs. He looks a lot like Miraculix from the Asterix comics, it actually seems as if he himself has fallen into the pot of magic potion. At least he is 100% fearless in relation to the impact of gravity in a 500m drop down the mountainside.

We had a good laugh there.

At Pluzine, we find Lake Piva. The water looks almost turquoise and there is an edge down towards the water where nothing grows. It provides a nice contrast.
The river branches and is truly photogenic.

After enjoying both the national park and the beautiful view at Lake Piva, we are at the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina. We have to go through the same trip again with passports, papers and insurance. But now we know the routine, it's actually very nice to cross borders and get stamps in your passport like in the old days.

There is the most beautiful afternoon light, which makes the area even more photogenic. As we get a good distance further, we go along small winding roads down the mountain.
It is said that the road is slippery in the wet, and we quickly find out that this is true.

When we come around another bend, a passenger car hangs and dangles from the guardrail. There are some young men who stop us and ask if our games on the car work, because then they could use some help.

We say it works fine, but we can't lift the car off the guardrail with the winch. If we start towing the car, we will rip everything that is sitting under it.
They say it doesn't matter if we just want to help them get it down from the guardrail.

We park our car and stretch the steel wire from the winch across the road and get it attached to the car. It's a bit dangerous to block the road like that, so we have to explain to them that they have to put a man on each side and stop the traffic if there are any road users.
The game is started and the car creaks and creaks while we pull it. The tailpipe is smoking, but they say we just have to keep going.

We get the car back on the road and they are jubilantly happy.
It's not pretty, but we'll push it over to the side, so they can pick it up on a sweep sheet later. We continue down the mountain road, and then there is also an overturned police car. However, they are getting help from a service company, so we proceed cautiously.

Safely down from the mountain, we run into a storm and find a campsite for the night.
The campsite has closed to guests, but the owner would like to let us spend the night anyway. She even unlocks a mini cabin so we can get a good night's sleep. It shouldn't cost extra, she says.

She probably thought it was a shame if we had to get the car ready to spend the night in when the weather was so bad.

We get a key to the outdoor shower, there is only cold water, she warns.
And we have to promise that it was a cold shiver we got there. Freshly bathed and installed in the cabin, we are ready to go to bed after a fantastic day, with wild experiences and great views.
